Of all of the occupational fields that I can think of, none seem better suited to remote work than those in software development, technical writing, quality assurance for tech products, cyber security, I.T. support, and other technology-related jobs.

But it is one thing to believe that there are great job opportunities for technology workers who prefer to work remotely. It is another thing to list some examples of those. In an effort to do the latter, we contacted 15 hiring experts to ask them for their ideas.

Remote Roles in Software, Design, and Data

I can speak to some of these from personal experience, but working remotely in tech is fairly straightforward. I’d recommend looking into being a software developer or engineer, a UX/UI designer, or being a data analyst/scientist as some of the more in-demand roles you’ll see online that are often fully remote. Software devs, like I used to be before becoming an entrepreneur, are very often remote, as working on code, debugging, testing, etc., while collaborating using asynchronous collaboration tools, is pretty standard. UX/UI designers do something similar, but they’re looking more at the look, feel, and functionality of digital products like websites, mobile apps, and software interfaces. They tend to work together with developers a lot, as they’re two sides of the same coin. 

Data analysts and data scientists, on the other hand, tend to do a lot of work in gathering, analyzing, and interpreting large datasets to help businesses make informed decisions. There is a lot more stakeholder management if you’re leaning into the insights side of the role, along with all of the databases, statistical models, and algorithms that you need to know to do your job. Data visualization is a hot topic right now, so I highly recommend looking into it.
