Recently, College Recruiter’s Founder and Chief Visionary Officer, Steven Rothberg, was a guest on the RecTech Podcast with Chris Russell of RecTech Media. Join Steven and Chris as they cover topics related to early career recruiting.

Early career recruiting

Steven delves into the recent shift in college recruiting. Originally, a vast majority of students would be interviewed on campus but, recently students are being interviewed virtually. He gives his predictions for the future of campus recruitment and how virtual recruitment will fit into the picture.

Entry-level gig jobs

Chris and Steven discuss how gig jobs can be a great option for students who are looking to earn extra cash. Steven thinks that College Career Service Offices that refuse to run gig jobs are making a mistake. He says that they are doing a disservice to their students, as the jobs that they offer do not have to be career-related to be of interest to students.

Soft skills versus hard skills

The conversation shifts to the employers that are targeting students and recent grads. Steven states that many of these employers equate the type of school and major with quality hires, but data shows that’s just not the case. He urges employers to try to understand that soft skills are more important than hard skills. While employers can teach students hard skills, they cannot teach certain soft skills, like critical thinking for example. This is where assessment tests can be of great use to those hiring students and recent grads.
