Occupational Safety Officer Johns Hopkins University We are seeking an Occupational Safety Officer . Document laboratory research information including chemical stock inventories, biological agents in use, fume hood and biosafety cabinet certification and other relevant safety equipment information. Serve as a laboratory safety advisor for laboratory and administrative staff. Provide information regarding general laboratory safety as well as specific chemical and biological safety issues. Assist staff in creating safe laboratory environments and work attitudes. Provide onsite laboratory safety consultation. Disseminate safety materials including signage and informational documents. Develop and present laboratory safety training programs that cover general laboratory safety, chemical safety, and biological safety. Present bloodborne pathogen and other safety training as needed including onsite training for specific laboratories or special needs. Investigate laboratory incidents, reports of non-compliance, and other safety issues that may arise. Assist with the completion of Environmental Compliance Assurances as required for Department of Defense funding. Research investigator safety status and provide safety compliance assurance documents including reviews of bloodborne pathogen training, biosafety research registrations, hazardous chemical registrations, and laboratory survey history. Perform an annual review of the JHU safety website information and applicable JHU safety protocols and policies to ensure information available to the JHU community is current and accurate. Be available off hours for emergency response if needed in the event of a lab incident. Perform other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications A college Degree in a Scientific Discipline is required. Advanced degrees are a plus. Requires a minimum of two years of research lab experience. Experience with chemical fume hoods and biological safety cabinets is expected. Knowledge of some chemical or biological safety standards is also expected. Knowledge of OSHA rules as they apply to laboratory environments is a plus as is any experience with BSL3 facilities or animal facilities. Attendance at supplemental classes regarding lab safety training will be expected, provided free of charge, and will occur during working hours. Research laboratory experience is required. Preferred Qualifications The candidate should be familiar with the daily workings of a laboratory and understand the internal and external issues at play in such an environment.
