POSITION PURPOSE: Under direct to general supervision of the Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics & Engineering, and under the daily lead direction of the Department Chair, the Instructional Support Technician I offers comprehensive technical support by providing materials, supplies, equipment-related assistance, field trip and outreach logistical support, and technical support for a variety of lower and upper division laboratory courses, and research activities in the Department of Geological Sciences.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Geology Laboratory Course Support
- Organize the preparation, set-up, clean-up and stowage of geological materials, supplies, and equipment for laboratory courses and field trips following well established policies and procedures.
- Assist with procuring, maintaining, and organizing geological materials, supplies, and equipment used in laboratory courses and on field trips.
- Assist with the organization of field trips including preparing equipment, making transportation arrangements, and helping to obtain necessary permits.
- Assist faculty in developing new instructional activities and demonstrations by acting as a resource for materials and equipment utilization.
- Provide basic technical assistance and support to students and faculty on individual experiments/projects.
- Establish and maintain the Geology walk through time and the Geology Park at the Environmental Study Area.
- Assist with organizing and maintaining geology displays.
- Assist with developing systems for optimizing facilities and equipment use.
- Support student-faculty research with logistical assistance.
- Monitor student workers assisting in laboratories and educational activities and guide them as necessary.
- Support Geology Club activities, including communications with alumni.
- Support outreach activities, including tours and visits to local schools.
Geology Laboratory Maintenance and Supplies
- Assist in maintaining clean and functional laboratory spaces.
- Archive and maintain geological materials and the geological library.
- Assist in receiving, assessing, and cataloging donations of geologic materials to the department.
- Maintain a list of appropriate vendors for materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Order and receive materials and supplies in support of teaching and research activities.
- Work with faculty to develop standard operating procedures (SOP’s) for equipment and be able to follow basic start-up, standby, and shut-down procedures safely.
- Learn to adjust and calibrate technical equipment as needed.
- Describe and communicate equipment needs or problems when repairs are required.
- Take inventory of equipment and accessory items and maintain the electronic inventory database.
- Assist with conducting yearly audits of equipment and accessory items.
Contribute to Safe Environment
- Support and abide by university safety protocols.
- Collaborate with the NSME Safety Officer.
- Serve as a member of the campus emergency response team and the NSME Safety Committee.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to two (2) years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline.
OR
Equivalent to two (2) years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience. LICENSES – Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) –
- Regular and reliable attendance is required.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of procedures and techniques, applicable to courses in geology.
- Ability to operate technical equipment related to different geology courses.
- Ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance and repairs on technical and scientific equipment.
- Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used.
- Ability to operate scientific or highly technical equipment and to interpret results.
- Ability to plan activities and prepare schedules.
- Ability to use methods, techniques and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials.
- Knowledge of equipment utilized in these courses.
- Knowledge of common safety procedures for handling and storage of chemicals used in laboratory preparations along with handling hazardous chemical waste.
- Ability to organize field operations, including equipment, transportation, and permits.
- Ability to learn, interpret independently, and apply a variety of policies and procedures. Able to identify deviations from applicable policies.
- Ability to drive state vehicles for field trips when necessary.
- Demonstrated competence in understanding, interpreting, and communicating procedures, policies, information, ideas, and instructions.
- Ability to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address simple to moderately complex problems and develop practical, thorough and, at times, creative solutions.
- Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.

- Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Geosciences, or a closely related field is preferred.
- Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: MEDIUM WORK – up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
